Malwen’s Diary

Dear Diary,

Last night, Arcann’da and I stayed with my aunt and uncle, Lani and Morthorn, in Tranquillien. It was different staying in town because my bed was smaller, and I had to share a room with Arcann’da. There were two small beds in the room, but I don’t think one was bigger than the other. If it was, I would have let him have it because I don’t think he slept very well. I woke up once during the night and he was awake. He said everything was okay, and that I should go back to sleep, but when we visited his friends in the little house at the bottom of the hill before coming here, he kept saying he was nervous, so I think it’s that! This morning I told him not to worry and that Ann’da and Mr. Tik are going to take care of everything at home. I think he needed to hear it because he hugged me and said thanks.

I can’t wait to see the garden! It’s going to be beautiful! Ann’da has been working on it all summer, and Miss Lilithel has been helping when she isn’t at the stable. I’ve been helping too, but I know most of the decorations must be going up this morning. Ann’da has been working on things for the cake too. It’s going to be the most amazing cake anyone has ever seen! I’m really excited.

Today has been going really well so far. The tailors from Silvermoon are here. My dress fits perfect. There was also a flower delivery and everyone has flowers now. The guy with the flowers had more that he had to deliver directly to the school. Oh, and there’s another guy here doing everyone’s hair! He put mine up, and gave me little curls along the side. I got to look in the mirror, and I really like it! Arcann’da said he didn’t want his hair too different, but he had a couple of braids put in, and on the end of his braids, he got a gold thing with a gem hanging off it. Then after his hair was done, he had to try on the robe. There weren’t many adjustments to do, but he insisted they fix the one sleeve. I didn’t see anything wrong with it. His robe is so pretty. He looks like a princess, or maybe a king because he’s a boy.

Vaildor and Aeramin are also going to be in the wedding and they get to ride in the carriage with us. Arcann’da is going to make a portal so that my aunt and uncle and little cousin can get there on time. They had to get changed too and have their hair done. Aeramin hates his because it’s pulled back in a braid. I don’t know why he hates braids, but he does! Vaildor had some curls done too, so his is more like mine. They have matching robes that kind of look like Arcann’da’s robe, but less fancy. Renner, one of the students, was here earlier to get his robe, but he had to go back to the school because there’s supposed to be guys with swords there. This is so exciting!

The carriage is here, and there’s six beautiful hawkstriders with it. I think they have extra feathers on their straps for the carriage because I’ve never seen hawkstriders with so many feathers before. We’re just waiting for the right time now. I already ate, but Lani is trying to get Arcann’da to eat a little more because he didn’t have much breakfast.

I can’t wait to arrive to the party!

Malwen’s Essay

My name is Malwen Fairsong and I’m seven and a half years old. My new teacher asked me to write an essay about myself and stuff, so this is it!

I’m really excited this week because I have a home now, and I don’t have to live at the orphanage anymore. I have two Ann’das here. One of them is Terellion, and he wants me to call him Ann’da, so I am! He’s really nice and he helps me do my hair every morning, and lets me help him make cakes. He works a lot with cleaning and stuff too, but he gets a lot of help from the butler, Tik, so he still has a lot of time for me after my lessons are done.

My other Ann’da is Hethurin, and he wants me to call him Arcann’da because he’s my Ann’da too, and a mage! So that’s what I call him. He’s really nice, and likes all the cake that ann’da makes for him. He’s busy teaching his classes during the day because this house is also a school, and there’s magic students living here too. It’s really exciting because magic looks really cool.

I live in the Ghostlands now because that’s where the house is. It’s a lot different compared to Silvermoon! The house is at the top of a cliff by the sea, and you can see really far from the top of the tower. Arcann’da says it’s a mini mage tower because he’s a mage, but he has the school too so he couldn’t have just a big tower because it would be hard to teach students in it. I think he’s right because I like my room here, and I wouldn’t want to give that up.

The school is also where I go to school because there’s a classroom here for younger students. Our teacher is from Kalimdor and has long blue hair and she’s really tall. She has a little boy, and he’s really cute. I hope I get extra points for this, and it’s true too! She brings him to class, but there aren’t many students there yet. It’s just me and two older boys, Vaildor and Kiandris. Vaildor isn’t there everyday because he goes to an art school in the city too. Kiandris is there every day because he doesn’t have another school to go to. There’s supposed to be a break for summer soon.

I also have a baby sister now. Ann’da and Arcann’da adopted her at the same time they adopted me. She’s only a few days old, and she’s super cute. They named her Narise, and I think that’s a pretty name. I like her, but I hope I don’t have to share my favorite doll with her. It’s the doll that Ann’da and Arcann’da got for me when they sponsored me. I had to leave it here when I went back to the orphanage, but I’m so glad to come back now! They got more dolls for me, but that one is still my favorite because it reminds me of how I came here. I won’t mind sharing the other ones with Narise when she’s older, but that one is mine.

Narise sleeps a lot. Arcann’da likes to carry her around in a sling while he’s teaching and I think she sleeps most of the time. One time this week, I did hear her cry because my classroom isn’t far from the other classroom where he teaches. I think Ann’da must have come to get her because the crying faded away like someone carried her somewhere else. I bet she was hungry. She doesn’t do a lot yet, but I really like her. I hope she likes me too!

And that’s all there is to say about me and stuff right now!

Malwen

The teacher said we had to write about our weekend over the weekend. I guess most of the other kids are going to write about their parents and brothers and sisters, but for once I don’t have to write about the orphanage. It’s Children’s Week, so the matron set up a sign asking for sponsors to come take us outside the orphanage for a bit. The older kids got to go earlier in the week, and I was starting to think I wouldn’t get to go this year, but then Mister Fairsong came in and the Matron called me over and asked me to pack some nice things for the weekend. I was so excited.

The first thing I noticed about Mister Fairsong was how fancy his robes were. I wish I had dresses that fancy! They were so pretty. He started talking to me after we left the orphanage, but I was a little shy. He said he was going to the robe shop because he was going to get married soon and needed to check on the progress of the robe he ordered. He also said he’s a mage. I know there’s a lot of people who are mages, but I don’t get to see any at the orphanage. I think magic looks really fun because you can just teleport all over, and make things appear from nowhere!

We arrived at the shop and he was talking to the people there about gold shades, and stuff. I wasn’t listening very well because I was looking at all the beautiful things they had there. I’ve never seen so many fancy things in one place before!

He asked me if I was hungry, and I really was, so I said yes! We went to a really nice shop with really good sandwiches. He bought a really big sandwich for me with chicken in it. It was so good! He just had a glass of water, but we sat while I ate. We talked some more. Mostly he asked questions about the orphanage, and what I liked to do and things like that.

After we ate, he made a portal. I was a little afraid to go through it, but he explained that he lived too far away to walk, and that the portal was completely safe. We went through it at the same time. That helped. Everything changed at once. One second we were outside in Silvermoon, and the next we were inside in a huge house! Mister Fairsong lives in the Ghostlands, which is kind of scary because I’ve never been outside of Silvermoon before except once last year when my sponsors then took me for a picnic just outside the gate. That was kind of nice, but this is even further.

The house is really big and fancy. Mister Fairsong said he runs a school to teach older students how to do magic. He also said there’s a class for regular studies for younger students because there isn’t any other school in the area. He said there’s only a couple students in that class right now, but there’s a lot of babies in the area, so in a few years it’s going to fill up!

He introduced me to Tik, his butler. Tik was really nice and said he’d take my things up to the room. Mister Fairsong told me after he left that Tik’s always lived there. I guess that must be a long time because Tik looks a bit old!

Mister Fairsong said it was time for me to meet his fiance, Terellion. We took another portal, but this time, I think it was just to another part of the house. Mister Terellion was there, and one of the magic students was too. They called her Des, and she seemed more like she was visiting than a student. They had cake and I got to have two big pieces. It was really good.

Mister Terellion seems really nice. He doesn’t wear fancy robes like Mister Fairsong. After they started talking, the topic quickly went to adopting me! I can’t believe it! I really really hope they’re not just saying that to make me happy because it happened last year, but the ladies then only came to see me a couple of times after they sponsored me and then that was it. The Matron said she didn’t know why they stopped wanting to adopt me. They didn’t tell her. I see a lot of kids in school who are mean and they’re brats and I wonder why they have a family and I don’t. I don’t think I’m a bad kid. I try really hard in school, and I don’t fight with the others like Ratha does. Her feet stink anyway. Not having a family makes me sad sometimes, and I really want to stay here with Mister Fairsong and Mister Terellion. I think they’ll be really great ann’das, but Mister Fairsong said they have to get married first to make it easier to prove they can provide a good family for me. They’re going to ask the Matron to extend the sponsorship. I really really hope she says yes! I also really really hope they mean it!

The room I’m staying in is mostly blue, which is one of my favorite colors and outside I can see the path that leads up to the house. There’s another house at the bottom of the hill, and this morning, Mister Fairsong and Mister Terellion showed me the garden. It’s on the other side of the house and it’s pretty big. One side of the garden has a wall, and then a cliff that overlooks the beach and the sea. It’s so pretty! The flowers are starting to bloom in the garden and I wished I could have stayed there all morning, but Mister Fairsong and Mister Terellion wanted to take me shopping. I have a new dress now, and it’s so fancy, I feel like a princess wearing it! Mister Terellion braided my hair and bought a doll for me. She’s really pretty too and has blond hair like me. I know if I take her back to the orphanage, I’ll have to let the other girls play with her to, but I’m a little worried that they might ruin her. I really hope the Matron agrees to extend the sponsorship.

Tomorrow, we’re going to the faire. I’m really excited about that too. I’ve heard about the faire, but I’ve never been there. Mister Terellion said they eat kodo feet there! Gross! I guess they also have good food. I hope so!
I have to go back on Monday. I’m worried that the Matron will say no and then Mister Fairsong and Mister Terellion will have to leave me there and then they won’t come back. I’m worried about if they adopt me too. I’ve never had a family before, and while Mister Fairsong has students, they’re a lot older than me, so I probably won’t have anyone to play dolls with anymore, but I’ll also have my own dolls, so maybe that will be okay.
